When I read it, I already knew what position I was going to take, but it was hard to express it. The only thing I can think of that could have helped was to write everything down first.

I'm very proud of my teammates that've come through in the project. I was worried initially, but I realized that everyone's schedules are varied and chaotic, and therefore it was kind of hard to adjust, as I was used to the kind of teamwork that requires sitting down and discussing the problem. I learned how to communicate between people to get some ideas going, as well as try conveying my opinion.

I have a good feeling about this project, and no matter what, I will know that I gave it my best shot.

Interview of Individual in your Profession

Ok, I did an interview with a teacher here at Chander/Gilbert. His name is Ted Wolter, who also does graphic design freelance. also Since this is the last day of class, I might as well get this over with.

What kind of technical writing do you do?
Mostly e-mail communication...setting up meetings, asking printers what they need, such as what file format do they want a picture in [a pdf as opposed to an JPEG]. As far as for teaching goes, I write the course descriptions, syllibi, surveys, and reports.

Reports?
They are reports for the school in regards to the art department, such as class enrollment, or results from a survey.

What do you have to consider in your writing in regards to audience, purpose, etc?
Clarity, accuracy, and no persuasion. I'm supposed to satisfy what the client wants, not what I want. I might make a recommendation [for the project], but if they say "I want this text over here", then I have to do it.

What issues do you encounter with writing?
If something isn't clear enough, but I'll try rephrasing it if necessary.

Why is writing important in this field?
It is essential to be a good communicator, especially if you are applying for a job. If you can't express yourself well, it doesn't matter how well your portfolio looks. Graphic design in particular also have to take writing in consideration. They have to consider the way text looks and is laid out.

In essence, technical writing is not only limited to the base, technical aspects, but the visual as well.

To: Ted Wolter
From: Monica Arceo
Re: Interview

Thank you for taking your time for the quick interview regarding technical writing, and especially showing me an example of what you write on a daily basis. More detailed notes are found on my Furl...what the heck, I'll copy and paste:

General Writing Site: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/
This is the OWL (Online Writing Lab) from Purdue University. It gives tips and instructions on handling the writing process, as well as to cite your paper. It also discusses various forms of writing, such as creative and job searching. It is very good for helping you learn how to write anything.

The Writing Process: http://www.studygs.net/writing/
This is a very thorough, step-by-step guide to the pre-writing process of writing. It starts off with suggesting how to start a thesis, audience, and how you will address your topic. Then, you can start outlining your ideas; in other words, brainstorm. Then, it gives tips on how to start writing the draft. Revision comes next. It gives several questions to consider while you proofread. This site is a wonderful guideline for the writing process.
Prewriting: http://www.esc.edu/ESConline/Across_ESC/WritersComplex.nsf/3CC42A422514347A8525671D0049F395/CE2B510E7D9975AE852569C3006ACCCC?OpenDocument
This is a very good guide on how to prewrite. Some people have trouble organizing their ideas or don't like making maps or trees. This page gives alternatives, as well as starting points as to where you can develop your own ideas to get started on writing. This is helpful for writing any future papers.

Planning: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/Users/ssfj3/study2.html
This is like pre-writing, but more of a "structure planning" method. Most formal writing will break ideas into three points, topped with an introduction and conclusion. It gives a very good example of how to stucture your ideas when you write a paper.

Drafting: http://www.uottawa.ca/academic/arts/writcent/hypergrammar/partopic.html
This is helpful for writing a "topic sentence", which will state the thesis of your paper. In other words, the main idea of your paper. It breaks down a sample paragraph and states how the topc sentence connects the ideas in the paragraph. This is good for helping you develop your main idea in a formal paper.

Revising: http://www.teachertidbytes.com/Teacher_St_Tutorial/Writing/TheWritingProcess/rewriting.html However simple this guide is, it helps give general guidelines on proofreading. It also suggests keeping some questions in mind as you proofread a paper, such a if the ideas flow with each other. It's a good starter for someone who doesn't know what to look for while revising.

Drafting: http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/acen/writerslab/handouts/computer.htm
This is a small guide warning to not rely solely on computer proofreaders. They can pick out simple grammatical and spelling errors, but not complex ones, such as usage. "Which" and "witch" are spelled correctly, but if you use "witch" in place of "which", then it is incorrect. Also, it suggests that if it makes a suggestion that you don't like, you shouldn't keep it anyway just because it said to. This is something everyone should read, since lots of people are notoriously dependent on them

Annontated Bibliograpy (11-28)

Work with headers and footers. I decided to chose this because it could come in handy for this presentation, or a future one. Besides, I had no idea you could put page numbers or headers on a PowerPoint slide. Anyway, it starts off by explaining what you can use the headers and footers for, and where the option for adding them are. Then, it gives step-by-step explanations on how to add and edit them. Also, it teaches about special situations. For example, if you wanted to make a title slide, but not include a page number on it, you can click a box to prevent this. Finally, it prompts you to download a temporary PowerPoint file to practice with.

Arrowood, J. Take the Pressure Off of your Presentation. Microsoft Office. Retreived 29 November 2006 from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/workessentials/HA100074301033.aspx.

This article talks about how to organize yourself for a stress-free presentation. This would fit more approapriately with oral presentations, but some of the tips would help with mine. Most people put all what they want to say on the slide itself, and expect it to "talk" for them. To solve this, you can make a notes section on the slide, and print it out with what you want to say, and leave hightlights on the slide itself. This way, the audience can focus what you are going to discuss. Secondly, reading off the slide can bore the audience. Instead on relying on just text, you can add animation, sounds, or pictures to liven the presentation. Audience engagement is not limited to your presentation. If you are doing a oral presentation, you can do quizzes, question and answers, activities, or just pass hand-outs. As long as your audience can feel like a part of the presentation, they will pay more attention to you.

Reading Reflection (11-28)

I read Chapter 9 of Workplace Literacy, and it discussed tips on how you can effectively give presentations, and use PowerPoints.

First, it discusses the advantages of using presentations over written reports. I believe this is true, because more people will remember what a presentation said ather than glancing from a paper. Also, you can be more persuasive with body language and voice.

Then, it gives some tips, which some I learned about in my communications class! For example, I learned how giving an introduction, transitions, and conclusions help the audience make sense of your ideas. It also brings up how to effectively use visual aids, so they can help emphasize your message, not overpower it. I liked the examples of visual aids they give, and how you can use them to their full potential.

Finally, it goes into PowerPoints, which caught my attention. I took the tips they had into consideration, like how to add notes. I wasn't sure how to, but now I do! A lot of it I knew already, but it was good for a refresher, and there were some things that were new to me.

Annontated Bibliography x2

Dombrowski, Paul. (2000). Ethics in technical communication. Boston: Allyn and Bacon.

I have decided to use our book as a guide to help me understand my ethical dilemma. The first few chapters explains several "point of views" when it comes to making an ethical decision. In the back, it gives suggestions as to how I should approach it, but I have decided to read them and come up with my own conclusions instead. After all, two people can share the general point of view, but not the exact same one. For the group portion, it will be especially helpful, since the assignment calls to analyze the problem from the many "perspectives" such as Kant, Aristotle, or utilitarian.

Frankfurt, H. Retrieved Tuesday, November 21, 2006 from the Academic Search Premier database.

This article comes from a discussion of another article. Frankfurt discusses the "Moral Obligations and Omissions" article by Jeremy Byrd. The original article discusses how we can be morally responcible, even if we fail to act. Frankfurt's article comments on "Moral..." and puts his own thoughts into what Byrd wrote. For example, he made up a story about saving a drowning boy. Even if the boy was going to drown anyway, would we be morally obliged to attempt to rescue him? This is a good article discussing the basics of having moral responsibility without action.

Deadline reflection (11-21)

Well, this week's been kind of busy, with starting WP#4 and all. But when the means to acheive the goal are beyond reach or comprehension, then it becomes nothing more than a fascade. The "Star Wars" project, on initial proposal, sounded like a wonderful idea, but as the technical details came out, there was either no way to prove it worked or could even be started at all. The project became just as fanciful as its namesake. I still can't believe they suggested using particle rays....

Though the data might not originate from us, at what point should we raise ethical questions about honesty, for example?
I don't think there should be a "point", but rather as soon as we hear of it. Data can be skewed to suit the self-interest of the author or audience. We should always be thinking critically as soon as we are presented with information, even coming from a position higher from us. To go along with an unethical statement makes us as unethical as the person coming up with the information.

At what point does innocently portraying your position favorably goes too far? And with whom does the responsibility lie, you or your employer?
I think it crosses the line when many people have criticized your argument, but you still perceive it as being true or ethical. Or, when it blindly follows the information, althought it could be incorrect or unethical. As for responsibility, it is your decision to believe the information, so it is your fault. Your employer can press you to believe a certain way, but you have the choice to accept it, or resign, such as David L. I've never liked writing persuasive papers, although I've been told my work reflects the opposite. But, practice never hurts.

Anyway, this project helped me persuade to propose something I had to believe in. I feel that if you want someone to accept a proposal, you have to have faith in whatever you're proposing and present it in a manner that says "I believe in this because of this and that, and I think you should too". So I had to believe that graphic tablets were going to help students before telling someone who might not know what tablets are.

It also helped me write in a very precise and professional manner, a far cry from how I wrote in WP#2. I had to make sure I wasn't redundant or used awkward words.

Overall, I felt really proud of my paper, and almost can't wait for the next one. Almost lol.

Deadline reflection (11-7)

Yay caught up!

Anyway, the grammar work we had to do was very helpful this time, and the reading too. For example, there were issues of audience clarity, and my rebuttle not being very strong. So I will focus on that. But, I also got complements of my tone and voice, which was important for me.

I edited both Onita's and Samuel's proposals on Exchange. Both papers had some good points, and were convincing, but there were some issues on clarity of certain ideas.

The first draft was slightly difficult, since I had to find good information, and try applying it to the paper. The Intuos2 "platinum" model price for about $400, $200 more than the regular Intuos2 model. It does mention that it is better than mice in that it less likely to cause repetitive stress injuries, and it is more precise for any type of designing. The only thing that justifies the price is the software bundle and the free mouse thrown in. The only use this site has is researching models the companies make. I recommended Wacom tablets in my paper, but Wacom produces many models based on size, quality, and features. Finding reviews of different models helped me pinpoint which model I should consider.

Nice Mice. (2002). For example, it discussed the $300 Intuos model and its features. It does discuss some newer mice models that promise to be more high-tech. It is a lecture discussing different technologies that allow computer users to interact with the computer, such as tablet pcs and mice. In one section, Mr. Baekcer discusses mice and tablets. He describes how they work, and the advantages/disadvantages they have. For example, tablets are "position sensing" versus "motion sensing" like mice. For example, if you write about oil spills in the past decade, but one or two sentences discuss the harmful effects of ozone pollution, the unity of the paragraph is disrupted. So, in this case, you would omit the sentences dealing with ozone pollution, and make sure the other sentences are related to each other.

"Achieving Parallelism" is not like unity, as it would sound. Parallelism is based on the structure of the sentences. This one is a little harder to explain....but basically, if you write your sentences describing a subject in one way, the same format should stay the same for the other.

I'll keep these in mind as I work on my final draft.

Deadline reflection (10-31)

I am officially very close to caught up! Overall, the other blogs are about where they were last time. again, sorry if I wasn't caught up enough, but now I am!

Elizabeth: http://wwwtoshi.blogspot.com/2006/11/october-31-hw3-annotated-bibliography.html

Jeannine: http://jeannine-madril.blogspot.com/2006/09/september-5-comprehensive-grammar.html

Jeff: http://gorf959.blogspot.com/2006/11/october-24-hw48-writing-project.html

Josh: http://jgrauer.blogspot.com/2006/11/october-24-hw4-writing-project.html

Wendy: http://wendymart.blogspot.com/2006/11/grammar-work-due-november-7.html

Ethics question #5 (10-31)

I read "A Frank Statement to Cigarette Smokers", and I was almost floored by the straightfoward denial. In fact, the denial was not from ignorance, but deliberate so as to prove that their product is safe and to keep their customers.

The document might be ethical in that they refer to authority figures, but on the other hand, it was noted in the Ethics reading that many were influenced (and probably paid for) by the companies. Nevertheless, it distorts respectable information to its own means, which is unethical.

What was the most striking to me was the fact that it blatantly said, in a nutshell "there is no reason you should stop smoking because these products are safe, and any information stating otherwise is "inconclusive" or "wrong". It discusses how a teacher discovered the usability of tablets in the classroom. Now, it does not cover the artistic side of tablet use, but rather the general uses, such as note taking. However, I felt this was important nevertheless because more and more classrooms are becoming technologically advanced, and it would be important to note this in my paper.

The second, "Graphic Tablets" discusses the specifications and advantages of two Wacom tablet models, the Intuos and Graphire. Intuos is the costlier model, but is more professional in features and performance than Graphire. Graphire, however, is more affortable and perfect for a beginning user. This would help anyone considering which tablet they should purchase to either start out, or replace an older one.

Finally, I found a wikipedia on graphic tablets in general. It discusses an extensive history of graphic tablets and older brands. It also talks about uses, brands, and why they are sometimes preferred over mice. This article is good for someone who is learning about tablets, and the page gives links to the official sites for the major tablet companies, such as Wacom or Aiptek.

Colwell, K. A lot, apparently. This chapter really pointed out how much more information I could look for. With that said, I can develop what I can look for and found:

-Convincing readers there is a problem

Problems with using mice with a more "naturally-based" computer program

Ergonomic concerns

Not using Corel Painter to its full potential

-How my solution is the best and most reasonable

How using a tablet will benefit the class

How tablets will bring Corel Painter into full usage

Most ergonmically comfortable

How Wacom brand is better than the other ones

And defending my points, such as costs, usability, and benefits.

The research can be conducted by interview with someone that knows about tablets, in this case, my art instructor. It discussed how to research research, in a nutshell. What does that mean? Basically, it is being critical of research that you can find either in print or electronically. For example, if you are researching on abortion, you can find many websites, but the problem is, most of them come from anti and pro abortion groups, who are biased in the topic.

However, what really stuck to me was Ethics chapter 6. It discussed how the tobacco industry basically lied about the harmful effects of cigarettes, although they knew very well about them. Since the 50s, this has been going on, from their flat-out denial, to the coverups and eventual "redefining" of terminology and ideas. For example, they stated that cigarrette related deaths are coincedentally caused by cancer. This chapter displayed ignorance in the interest of self-protection.

What really got to me was the case of the Marlboro Man. His widow sued the tobacco industry based on the fact that her husband was addicted from making advertisements for Marlboro cigarettes. He was smoking up to 5 packs a day. Also, she claimed he had no idea of the bad effects of cigarette smoking, and was addicted by the time he was sick. Because of the greed and self-serving "facts" from a group of people, many people, including the Marlboro Man suffered greatly and still do.

Checklist for Visual Communication (10-17)

I didn't know where this was until I saw someone else's post, so I'm doing it now.

Basically, it is to determine if my instructions followed several important guidelines:

Does the visual serve a legitimate purpose? Yes, it demonstrates my steps.

Is this the best type of visual for your purpose and audience? Yes, because it shows what screens you should be getting.

Is the level of complexity approapriate for the audience? Hmm...it is understandable.

Is the visual titled and numbered? No...oops.

Are all patterns in the visual id-ed by label or legend? What is this?

Are all values or units of measurement specified? n/a

Is color used tastefully and approapriately? Yes, because I used screencaps

Does the visual relatinships represent the numeric relationships correctly? n/a

Are all data sources cited? n/a...I believe ^_^;

Has written permission been obtained for reproducing or adapting a visual from a copywrited source in any type of work to be published? Well, I used screencaps from Blogger, but the HTML belongs to someone else. Wacom is a very popular brand, and considered to be the best. However, someone might want to find an alternative. For example, Aipteck makes tablets that come with a corded pen, but Wacom doesn't. However, Aipteck tablets are cheaper than Wacom. It gives links to the official web pages of each company, and discusses each one's products. This page would be helpful if you were interested in purchasing a tablet for yourself.

"Comparison of Postures from Pen and Mouse Use" is a PDF covering a study of the use of mice versus graphic tablets. It comes from the Wacom website, so it could be slightly biased (but then again, isn't all information biased?) Nevertheless, it gives an overview of what they are testing for with each instrument. For example, they test how far the fingers extend when the subject uses a mouse, then a tablet. The hand has to extend itself to position itself on a mouse, while a tablet pen is held like a regular one, reducing strain. This helped me prove that using tablets were not only efficient, but ergonomically suitable for the classroom.

"An Overview of Graphic Tablet Models". It really helped as to how I should look at my problem. For example, my problem is the use of mice in a class that simulates natural brush strokes by using computers. Mice can injure wrists, and do not flow as smoothly as a brush would. Then, it discussed how to introduce a solution with points to be taken into consideration. Like:

- Will a tablet be costly?
- How easy are they to use?
- Are they ergonomic?

It also introduced how to make pictoral diagrams to illustrate problems, which I found interesting.

The third chapter discussed 3 levels of readers: primary, secondary, and tetriary readers. Simply, the relavance your document has to certain readers. If it is a manual to build a model, the builders are the primary readers, the manufacturers are the secondary readers, and the finacial department are the tetriary readers.

Very interesting reading.

Writing Project Reflection (10-24)

I learned alot with this project. It helped me learn about design layout, as well as picking the correct tone to speak to an audience. Plus, it became more practice concerning memo writing. I never know if I'm writing appropriately, or conveying my points well enough to get what I want across.

Working with images and layouts was the best part. Since I'm going to do graphic design, this helped me gain a "eye" for how text and images should work together, not be on top or "against" each other. It gave an example of a poorly designed one. The title was too big, and the pictures were incorrectly placed. It broke what could help the design down to parts, and gave the final edited one. The final was very well laid out, with the pictures complementing the article, rather than distorting or dominating it. This would help with my career, because part of graphic design is determining how images and text should be laid out on a page for a more visually effective paper.

The second link is a template for a project bid (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/workessentials/TC010185461033.aspx). It used it as an example of how communication, regardless of how well it is written, can be used.

It was shocking to know that even though memos were written about Challenger's faulty O-ring, NASA officials still wanted to launch. Each of the memos were increasingly "urgent-sounding", but they were still disregarded, because it would cost more to ground it and, they felt the O-rings were sturdy, since they "haven't broken, so they must still be working".

So in reality, ignorance and overconfidence were parts of the Challenger disaster, but the memo only further exposed the harsh truth of ignoring what we should do. It's similar to driving without a seat belt. You are running a risk, but the further you go without wearing it, it becomes second nature, until you get into a wreck.

Ethics Question #3 (10-17)

The question was "Is the writer ethically responsible for what is written, even after it has been communicated?". This is brought up from the chapter's discussion of the Challenger disaster. Part of the misfortune that occured was that various memos were sent to NASA officials from engineering concerned about the O-rings. They were put aside due to costs it would cause if they were to postpone the launch.

So, on one side, yes, the writer would be responsible for what they wrote. They would have to make sure it went to the right person and that it was written in the appropriate tone. On the other hand, what the reader does is just as important. In a sense, the old saying "you can lead a horse to water..." applies here. The reader can either take the information or leave it.

Deadline reflection (10-10)

Most of the class is caught up or close to it, from what I've been reading.

Lately, another class had me lost my track, but I'll try to get caught up more asap. Elizabeth wrote that it was unethical, but sometimes in certain situations it can be. Mirelle took a different approach, which is basically "quoting" the original developers for their work.

So it would seem that it would be ethical in certain situations, but unethical on the baseline. I still think it is unethical, but from reading these other posts, I can think about it from a different perspective.

Josh: http://jgrauer.blogspot.com/2006/10/october-3-hw6-ethics-q1.html
Mirelle: http://rustybloggy.blogspot.com/2006/10/hw5-10306-question-1-ethics.html
Elizabeth: http://wwwtoshi.blogspot.com/2006/10/october-3-hw5-question-1-from-ethics.html

Annontated Bibliograpy (10-10)

I chose three templates that would be helpful in my future job. I chose one for a cover letter, a resume, and a calendar.

The first template was for a cover letter used for job application (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC063692841033.aspx?CategoryID=CT011224451033). I picked this one out because I felt that learning how to format a cover letter was important for when I apply for jobs once I move out into the job market. It sets the indentations and spacing for the letter automatically, so all you would have to do is fill in what you need. It even gives suggestions for what to write. This would help anyone, either for an assignment, or a professional setting. The next template I chose was for a resume (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC060915231033.aspx?CategoryID=CT011224421033 ) Also, I felt this would help for when I look for work. It lays it out nice and neat, and according to job experience. It tells you where to put everything, and it formats it for you already, to give it a crisp, clean layout. Finally, I chose the Calendar template. (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC062062671033.aspx?CategoryID=CT062640421033 ). Why such a drastic change? Well, I figured working for companies require having deadlines arranged to be met. So, I thought a calendar would help me keep track of important dates, as well as figure out where I am with particular assignments. You can add dates, information, and edit it. It keeps it all neatly, and you can print it out for reference without the computer.

(2006). Paxton, A & Podesta, S. For example, in my profession, the use of images is critical, but if I were to pick out a random picture of a dog for a flyer, for example, I would need to know if it is royalty-free, or if I would be infringing on copyright.

So, for WP#2, which required images, I would have to consider using images from the Internet. I took screen caps of Word. But now that I think about it, would that be copyright infringement? I took pictures of something that doesn't belong to me, like the policies of stores not wanting you to take pictures in the store.

There is a unwritten rule that pictures used in educational settings are exempt. For example, I made CD covers for a singer using pictures I found scanned from magazines on the Internet as a final project, as well as a fancy illustration using two characters from an anime series. However, I would not be able to use these in a professional setting, unless I wrote and asked for permission from the original producers of the images. So in this case, if it were "unethical" to screencap Word, it would not be unethical for this purpose.

Grammar Work (10-3)

I did the grammar exercizes for shift in tense, number, voice, and stringy sentences.

My results?

Shift in number: 80%
Shift in tense: 90%
Passive/Active Voice: 20%
Stringy Sentences: 75%

My tenses and numbers were better than I thought. In the lesson, it introduces what are endnotes and footnotes and what they are used for. For example, it explained the difference is simply their location on the document layout. It also discussed how to access them and how to put them into your paper. Then, it gave two practice lessons on how to place, edit, and delete them. Finally, it discussed the footnote editor, which allows you to format your notes separately. I decided to watch this tutorial, because adding references are especially important to know how to. Also, it helps to suppliment the paper itself without disrupting the flow of the paragraph idea. I decided to watch this lesson because not only will I might have to cite papers for this class, but in future classes as well.

(2006). In this case, yes, because although it would give Io Industries an edge, it is unethical to take someone else’s idea, and eventually it will come back and harm the company much more. Therefore, I would be influenced by my own ethical standards and what I feel is right.

If I were at Callisto Inc, I would feel that Io had done something very unethical, because they plan to publish information that was stolen from my company.

If I were to decide if Io’s actions were unethical, I would say they were, because the means they used to obtain this information was not.

I feel that your ethical standpoint should not change depending on the situation you are in. If someone suggests you do something and you know it is unethical, you have no reason to agree because they’re telling you to do it. Ethics is extremely important when you write, because what you write (or told to) does not happen in a bubble, and it can affect the company producing the writing, or the reader. For example, a badly written set of instructions can lead to lawsuits over injuries or even a wrongful death. Carelessness has led to both sides being hurt. So it is essential that writers take an ethical viewpoint when they decide to write, even if it hurts them, they will benefit the greater good anyway.

Complex Writing Situations (10-3)

In graphic design, long reports aren’t as required as memos, but perhaps the use of graphics would be. However, a possible proposal for an idea would be more likely. If I had an idea for a new logo, I would have to present what it looks like, and why I designed it the way I did, and why it is better than the old one. I would also have to consider who I am writing my proposal for and why. Am I convincing them to use a certain graphic I made? Or am I just embellishing a paper someone else wrote? There isn’t much “long” writing in design, but only when absolutely necessary.

Reading Reflection (10-3)

The reading for this deadline was Chapter 12 of the Concise Guide, and Ethics chapter 4.

Concise Guide: This chapter talked about writing long reports, proposals, and definitions. It discussed what each thing is, such as the definitions being more like descriptions of an idea or an object. For example, they can describe what a car motor is like and what it does, piece by piece or in the whole. It also gave guidelines, which are important, because consideration of ethics, audience, and purpose are just as important as in memos or other kinds of writing. For example, if you are writing a proposal for a new kind of shoe, you would have to consider the research put into it, the estimated costs of advertising, production, and distribution, and how beneficial the idea would be. Then you would have to consider "who am I writing this report for?" The CEO? The accountants? The designers?

Ethics: This chapter dealt with Nazi records. I found it interesting (not the actual subject matter), but because it took the time to analyze them and point out the good and the bad. It discussed how documents of any type can reach their goals without considering the means it was brought about. For example, it talked about how a university wanted Jewish Bolshevic skulls for their collection. Therefore, a memo was sent from a doctor nonchalantly discussing methods on how to obtain them. The language used didn't care for how they were obtained, but that they would be "beneficial" to research. So really, the ends meant more than the means, which is an ethical dilemma: is how I got the research important as well as the research itself?

Ethics Question #7

The Concise Guide Book addresses ethics almost in the same methods the Ethics one does.

Aristotle: We should do something because it's good- This is true, because when we take action to do something, it should be for the right reasons.

Kant: We should do it because it is our obligation- This pertains to what the book discusses about the positive and negative of taking a stand. If you follow what you feel is ethical, perhaps the company doesn't feel the same, and either fire you or repremand you. But, you feel it is your obligation to protect the company's integrity or the public it services.

Utilitarinaism: We should do it because it benefits the greater good - If Kant's theory doesn't seem as close to the book, then this one will do. If your ethical decision should benefit everyone, then it should be good. On the other hand, if you only had so much food for a multitude of people, you would have to consider "which groups of people should receive this food and would benefit most from it?" Healthy people? Children? Eldery?

Feminism/Caring: This one was particularly vague in our book, since what it covers is the writing process, not the emotional decision making. However, emotion does play a part, since you have to decide if what you write is harmful or offensive to the reader.

Deadline reflection- 9/26

It seems most people are pretty much caught up. Afterwards I read the ad, and wrote my first draft, using the ad as an aide. Then, I took the paper to the Writing Center at my college. It helped me get more feedback than just the two from Exchange.

I was proud of my cover letter, because it was my first ever. I'm also concerned for it. I'm just mostly nervous (lol). I learned how to write better resumes and format them nicely. Before, it looked almost garrish, for lack of better words. Personally I would like to try getting better at writing this way. But it's fun.

As for course outcomes...it seems, according to the syllabus, if you can write "technically", as in a professional manner. I've done some things like it in high school, but this assignment had definitely sharpened my skills and taught me a thing or two as well.

annotated bibliography (9/26)

(2006). Basically, ethics are based on reason, and the right decision should always be chosen. Kant's version is similar, but it is based on a "duty" each person has to perform. Utilitarinism deals with what would benefit the most people for the "greater good". Then there is feminist and care perspectives. Feminist perspectives are based on "female" aspects such as dealing with each case on a personal and case-by-case manner, rather than the "impersonal male" method. The Caring perspective leans towards emotions.

Each of these ethical "theories" are in themselves case-by-case situations. For example, to decide if stealing is moral, you wouldn't think "how will this benefit the most people?".

Product-Oriented Communication Situations

As I read Chapter 11 of Concise Guide, I realized how much of it pertains to my field. It described manuals, pamphets, specifications, and similar literature. Many times they are created by graphic designers in the company. They are given some information by either a boss or someone within their department, and made to create instructions or the like in consideration to audience, usability, and situations.

For example, putting together an informational pamphlet about a product has some issues to address.

How would I promote the product?

Who is reading this, a first time buyer, or someone buying a new product from a familiar company?

How do I set up the text to make it approachable to the reader? And in what tone do I write it in?

This is a sampling of the issues graphic designers face. Also, the use of color, graphics, and text is crucial to communication. If the product is a new computer chip for a company, it should look professional and almost plain. On the other hand, if it is for a new CD player, it should be flashy and "hip", attracting young buyers.

My Responces for Ethics Question #3 (9/19

I got two comments, one from Wendy, and the other from Josh. So I decided to comment them back with my own responces for the web sites they chose to analyze.

Wendy chose the Humane Society's US web page, and it definely used pathos with using pictures of animals, either looking cute and fuzzy, or appealing to your sympathetic side by posting pictures of cases of animal cruelty.

Josh used CNN and IMDB's websites as his examples. They were both simple and streamlined, but their ethos and pathos varied. CNN was stark and almost technical. It was to-the-point and gave a feeling of formality and professionalism. IMDB is a movie database that allows the public to post reviews and comment on movies. The tone is slightly more relaxed, allowing more images and color to its layout.

From looking at these websites, I noticed how the ethics of using emotions and authority can vary to communicate a certain message to the viewer. They can play on our heartstrings, or hit us with cold hard facts.

My comments on Wendy's post- http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=33193151&postID=115861996155294965

My comments on Josh's post- http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=33405041&postID=115872225084695772

Peer Review Reflection

I reviewed Angela's and Jeannine's papers and both were generally very good. What that means is not necessarily what should go in them, but how they should look in presentation. Resumes have to be formatted in a concise manner for easier reading and gathering of useful information. Again, the rhetorical situation applies in terms of layout: will the reader be able to find my contact information? Am I using too much formatting that could deter the reader from what is necessary? So it gives four different examples of how to overcome these problems. Each one is varied in what information went in what order, and how it was laid on the page, but they were neat, organized, and simple.

The second one website was equally good. It gave sample cover letters, each with a different style of formatting and information used. Each letter was streamlined and visually appealing, and made you want to read what was written. The size of the paragraphs were balanced, being neither too long or short. But what was most important was that the necessary information was mentioned in neat paragraphs according to importance and length. From looking at both sites, I felt that both my resume and my cover letter need some tidying up, according to the examples.

Reading Reflection

The reading consisted of ethics and page layout. But what was more important was ethics.

Ethics is important to consider because not only can unethical writing hurt you, but many other people, such as coworkers, the company, or the public. To omit a safety warning on a product can not only hurt the customers, but the company when they come under scrutiny. On the other hand, being ethical can hurt you as well. If a company is trying to save face, they might fire you or repramand you for trying to speak out or disagree.

Determining what is ethical and what isn't, is entirely up to you. You have to decide if it is or not, and what consequences will follow with your choice.

Deadline Reflection 9-19

Charlene (http://charlenelusby.blogspot.com/) - Annontated Bibliograpy, Reading Reflection
Angie (http://aeaguiar.blogspot.com/) - Interview, Everyday Communication Situations
Chelsea (http://seachel.blogspot.com/) - What Makes a Job Application Packet Accessible, Usable, and Relevant?

So far, it seems everyone is caught up, except for this recent deadline. It's Radio Goethe, a German music web radio. At first glance it seems like a jumble of colors and Java Script. However, it does reach some sort of emotional appeal. The colors reflect an industrial, almost militant feel. The station usually plays rock, so it reaches out to the audience by connecting to their tastes. Plus Goethe sitting in the corner with a Fender helps.

The second one is my school's website for Chandler-Gilbert Community College. It uses both pathos and ethos. It uses pathos with the calm shades of green and other complementing colors. It also uses images to give an atmosphere of college life, such as student commentary accompanying their pictures, or landscaping from the campus. The ethos found is the organization of the text and links. It uses serif fonts organized neatly and without much flair. Also, the links are arranged in a easily accesible row, and the drop down menu is set up in the top, for users usually look at the top to do in-site searches.

Websites use pathos and ethos to convey a feeling or their authority. They utilize color, images, font, and links to send a message to the viewer.

Checklist for Page Layout and Design

Looking over at my layout based on the textbook, it seems that I have a few things I could improve on.

For instance, on my cover letter, my paragraphs seem too large, and it would take time to read. Most employers would not have time to read this. I would need to break it down a little.

Secondly, my resume looks heavily formatted with bolds and bullets. I would try to limit the formatting and bullets to make it discreet.

The checklist in our book is useful with deciding if your paper needs to tone down its formatting.

follow up email

Marketing Manager
P.O. The book goes over the basics of writing cover letters and resumes for both new and experienced writers. What I found most helpful, however, where the samples. As much as words can describe the layout and formatting, a picture helps the reader to visualize the layout. Also, the text itself does not go into layout that much, but rather what goes into it, like experiences and skills.

The chapter also discusses memos, letters, and oral presentations, which are important in themselves, but what I found useful for this project was the resume and cover letter sections.

Communication in my field

Technical communication occurs everywhere, even in an art-based field. From what I learned from the interview with Magdalena, it is mostly by e-mail or memos. However, the rhetorical situation applies.

You have to consider for whom you're writing it for. If you are writing to a new client, your tone must come across as professional rather than if you were writing a memo to someone down a few doors from you. Also, your purpose is what you need to consider. If you're asking someone what they want with a particular design, you use a different apporoach rather than if you were writing instructions. Finally, the context that it will be in is important to consider. How will your message be interpreted in certain suituations, such as if your receiver is in a rush rather than being calm?

The rhetorical situation is used in all types of communication in all fields, as evident here.

annotated bibliography

ECCS-Resourses-Cover Letter Tips. You have to consider your audience (the employer) and your purpose (getting a job). Then, you need to develop what you plan to write. You have to write your qualifications, abilities, and good qualities effectively so the audience can understand and interpret the information they need. Finally, you need to do some research. You need to know what the company does, believes in, and how they operate. Once you find key terms they use, you can work your cover letter and resume to fit their standards.

Once that is done, you need to write out your application packet, grouping information by what they address. Also, this would be the time to proofread and get input from other people from what you wrote.

A usable job application can follow the usability format and be successful, since employers want information that's clear, concise, and useful.

Interview Memo

memorandum

to: R. Rodriguez
from: Monica Arceo
subject: Interview with individual in profession
date: 9/13/2006
cc: Eng 111 class

For this assignment, we were to interview an individual in a profession that we were interested in and ask about writing issues they encounter in their day-to-day work. So I asked my school’s graphic designer, Magdalena Soto. She does all the advertisements, flyers, and signage for Chandler-Gilbert Community College professionally. This is something I would like to do in the future, so I decided to interview her.

From the interview, I learned that although there is not much writing done in the field, except in higher designing positions like management, it is still essential to learn how to write professionally. For example, much of her communication is done through e-mail or memos. She can ask her clients for specific details on a project they want, or she needs to make instructions on how to use a logo she designed to printers or anyone else using them.
Below is a transcript of the interview:

Monica Arceo: In general, what do graphic designers do?
Magdalena Soto: I design covers for the new schedules in school, the catalogs, advertisements, stationery, posters, marketing, and some web graphics
MA: Is there much professional writing in your field?
MS: If you want to apply for a job, you need to write a résumé. Most of the time, I do writing in e-mails to communicate to clients. I also write guidelines and instructions for templates and logos I make so they are used correctly.
MA: What do you consider with audience, purpose, and situation?
MS: Obviously, if I’m writing to people higher than I am, I will use a different tone than if I were writing to someone down the chain or to a coworker. I usually write to management about introducing a project and discuss to them about it.
MA: What do you write about?
MS: Mostly introducing a concept, asking about specific details, and giving instructions. People who are managers would do more writing.
MA: What are certain issues associated with writing in your field?
MS: Mostly if the person is not familiar with technical terms, they might not understand with what you are talking about. You have to make sure you’re being clear about what you are trying to say.
MA: A friend of mine recently disagreed about learning how to write technically, because “you don’t have to write essays in the real world”. Do you agree, disagree, or how do you feel about this?
MS: The only time I would have to write a report is annual reports or progress reports. Essays and reports are usually management-level work. What I have to do, though, is write memos, notes, and e-mails to communicate to others about projects I’m working on.

From the interview, I learned that although there is not much writing in the graphic design field, there is still a need for formal writing and communication.
Attached on the next page is the thank you letter I wrote to Magdalena about the interview.

Monica Arceo
3563 S. I appreciate your taking your time out of your day and helping me with my assignment. From it, I was able to gain insight into not only the field I am interested in working in, but how writing is important as well. Thank you again for your interest.

Sincerely,

Monica Arceo

The Writing Process

A question posted on the assignment was "have I used the writing process before in my writing?" Yes. For example, I wrote a paper for my English 102 class about migrant labor. We had to pick one issue affecting us and write a persuasive essay on whether we were for or against the topic.

So I chose my topic, migrant labor. Okay, what about it? Well, I was for migrant labor. At this point, you would have to narrow the topic to a manageble level. So I was at the point with "Should we allow migrant labor (as in a guest-worker program)?". Now it was time for research. I found all my material, and analyzed it. I would have to think "Is this article relevant to what I'm looking up?", for example, and "Does this come from a reliable source?" Afterwards came putting the information down, proofreading, and finalizing the paper.

What would be the most important part would be the research. Not really the topic itself, but what you are going to be working on. It's obvious, but it's also the most complicated. For example, if you were to write about rainforests, what would you write about? The ecosystem? The various species of amphibians? Conservation issues? And within those categories, how detailed do you want to be? You cannot be too detailed, or there will not be enough information to find. So you have to find a balance, and once you do, the rest of it falls into place.

Deadline reflection- 9/5 (yes it's on the 9th)

From the looks of it, it seems that most of my classmates have been pretty on top of their assignments so far. Readers will not look at a paper seriously if a manual that is written is filled with misspelled words and incorrect grammar. Also, the chapter discusses using clear, concise language. In order for a consumer to effectively use a product, they need to understand what you are trying to tell them without being too vague or pretentious. Finally, the most important rule to consider is design and research. You have to consider audience, layout, and information:

"Will my readers understand my writing?"
"Will my readers be able to read my directions in this font?"
"Are my directions clear and precise?"

These are but a few questions a writer has to consider when writing anything for a professional setting.

Chapter 10 discusses the various formats and guidelines for resumes, memos, presentations, letters, and short reports. It shows each form of communication and talks about how each part of it should be done. For example, it shows how to write a memo and where to put each important part where.

The more I read the chapters, the more I realize how important it is to learn how to write in a professional setting, even in an art-based field. Designing manuals, instructions, and books all require knowing how to write correctly.

Reading Reflection #1

Based from what I read so far, I figured the course is going to cover the basics of writing professionally for many uses, from presentations to reports. At first, most would ask "why do I need an English class if I'm going to be an artist/fireman/doctor?" But, as I read more into the chapters, I realized that knowing how to write is essencial for communication of any type, whether it be person to person, or writing an ad. You have to know who you are writing for, what is your message or purpose, and what is the atmosphere/theme of your writing? Most people would assume it would be simple to consider, but it is actually multi-faceted in terms of what the reader expects.

First, consideration of the demographic of the reader is important. Is the reader within a certain race/gender/education level? Do they have a certain mindset? What position are they at in the company? These things help determine if the reader will like what is sent to them, since their innate bias will be appealed.

Secondly, considering the purpose of the application is crucial. The application should cover what the employer is looking for in a person, and why they should pick that certain applicant over the other ones.

Finally, the context in which the application is written in is important. For example, what is the application written for? An entry level job, or rising up into an executive position?

Figuring out who is reading the application is essential to being chosen, since they will be able to connect more with the writer and be more open to consideration.

Job Application - Using Rhetorical Situations

Making a job application accessible, usable, and relevant is crucial because it is the first impression a potential employer has of the applicant. The reviewer is able to find information and decide if it is relevant to them when it is easy to access.

Also, many times the reviewer simply glances at the cover letters, and if what they are looking for is not right in front of them, then they will disregard it, as if it was never sent to them. Also, usable information is a must. Writing about hobbies or old jobs is not what employers really want right away. They want to know what qualities, abilities, and qualifications you have, along with important contact information. Therefore, putting usable information first in a logical order makes the application process all the most effective.

Finally, relevant information is important in an application, because employers not only want to know what qualities someone has, but how would they benefit the company. Being able to use certain computer programs is nice, but if it is no use to the company at all, it would serve no purpose other than to take up space.

Therefore, with this in mind, the rhetorical “triangle” has some use in the “real world”. It is useful for organizing and writing out information in logical and orderly sense, which impresses potential employers the most.

Rhetorical Situation

The rhetorical situation is essentially figuring out what your purpose, audience, and writing situation are. The purpose is what you are writing your paper for and why. The audience is dependent on who is reading the paper, and for what reason. The situation is the environment and context your paper is written or read in.

A situation where I had to use the rhetorical situation was when I did my honors project for my Art History 102 class. I had to visit an art exhibit and write about my experiences and thoughts on the display. Using the rhetorical situation is essential here because I had to think about my purpose formost:

Why am I writing about the exhibit?

What purpose does the experience serve?

How do I present my ideas? By explanation? Narration?

How do I connect my ideas to the ideas and themes discussed in class?

Then, I had to consider my audience:

Will they appreciate the art as much as I did?

How will the exhibit connect with what they learned in the class?

At this point, will they understand certain terms, or are there some that are new to them?

Will the information be relevant to them?

Would they need background on the artists?

Finally, my writing situation was important. I had a certain time frame to research my topic by visiting an exhibit, and prepare my thoughts and background information into a paper and present it to the class. I had to consider how well my audience knew about what I was presenting, and setting the purpose so it would connect to the class material, not some random topic thrown into the open.

No matter for what situation you write for, the rhetorical situation helps you organize your thoughts and puts them into consideration for not only your own goals, but for the audience as well.

Introduction

Hi my name's Monica, and I'm taking English 111 online at Mesa Community College. I chose to take this class because not only is it required for my Associates, but personally I believe it is important to learn how to write for a professional environment, regardless of what field one enters.I'm currently trying to earn my Associates of Applied Sciences in Computer Art/Illustration. I enjoy drawing (computer or traditional), reading, and music.

Woah.

Apparently my old blog was the beta version, therefore it wasn't behaving nicely with the other blogs.
